Penaran is a 220 hectare area of upland raised bog SSSI and SAC, between Dolgellau and Bala in Gwynedd. It is owned and managed by Forestry Commission Cymru, who in partnership with the RSPB, have carried out an extensive habitat restoration project on the site. Correct grazing of the site is vital to prevent vegetation from becoming rank, and to encourage important species of wildflowers and mosses. Finding local farmers to graze the site proved difficult, due to its wetness and remoteness.
With funding from the Countryside Council for Wales, PONT was able to purchase a herd of Carneddau ponies and install a pony handling system to facilitate gathering and welfare checks. The ponies have now been successfully grazing the site for a year, with a local farmer making regular visits to check on their wellbeing.
