Red is part of an innovative new community cow-share project taking place on Gower. The cow-shares aim is to rear a small herd of cattle on Fairwood Common, helping to preserve the wildlife value of the common along with other commoners. Red is a Highland x Aberdeen Angus, a small, hardy cross that will do well out on the commons.
Fairwood Common is a large area of common land, designated as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC). It consists of wet heathy grassland, marshy grassland with bracken and scrub on the higher ground [1]. Species of interest on the commons include marsh fritillary, lousewort, tormentil, meadow pipit and snipe. Appropriate grazing by these cattle will help maintain the common in good ecological condition.
